KACHNAR
Course: Surface Design
Guided by: Meera Naidu
Duration: 1 Nov – 12 Nov 2022
Brief :
This project aims to establish a basic proficiency in surface design techniques, specifically focusing on pattern repeats like straight, half drop, and scaling. It also seeks to explore traditional motifs such as bel, boota, and jaal, examining their cultural significance, strategic placement, and market relevance.
INSPIRATION

FOLIAGE STUDY
The initial phase involved closely observing and studying every aspect of the "Bauhinia" plant and its flora. Various sketches were drawn to capture the intricate patterns on the petals, the contours of the leaves, the arrangement of the veins, and other fine details.
This detailed exploration of form and shape guided the process toward the next stage.

INITIAL JAAL

The basic jaal made after exploring the form of the foliage.

The tendrils of the jaal were interlinked to create an all-over print having fluidity and continuity.
RECTIFICATION OF JALL

The basic jaal is horizontally cut, and its opposite edges are adhered together. Similarly, it is again vertically cut, and its opposite edges are also stick together.
Following this, any overlapping sections of the jaal is corrected. After rectification, the jaal is placed into repetition, and further changes take place.
FINAL SCREENS FOR SAREES

Three final screens have been created, each measuring "20 by 20 inches", with the actual design area being "18 by 18 inches", intended for printing on sarees.
